Lakers Upset the Celtics for the Third Time at Home while Anthony Davis and LeBron James Sit On the Sidelines

The Los Angeles Lakers were not well-represented in the pregame injury report on Thursday.

But in a game against the Celtics, All-Stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis were both injured. As a result, Lakers role players pulled off a surprising 114-105 upset in Boston. While Davis missed his second straight game due to hip spasms and Achilles tendinopathy, James sat with a painful ankle.

After a 22-2 start at TD Garden, the Celtics’ defeat was only their third at home. They have also lost three straight since a franchise-high 20-0 home opening day two weeks ago.

Austin Reaves Achieves a Career High by Distance

With a career-high seven 3-pointers in his 32-point performance, Austin Reaves provided the offensive fire for Los Angeles.

In the meantime, despite Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown having a bad shooting night, the Lakers defense vexed Boston’s All-Stars.

On the fourth leg of a six-game road swing, the Lakers, who are struggling, defeated the best first-half team in the Eastern Conference on the road. They defeated the Golden State Warriors in double overtime on Saturday to start the road trip at 2-2.

Lakers dominate the most of the match

Early on, the Lakers established themselves, jumping off to an early 24–15 lead in the first quarter and building on it to 60–46 at the half. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Celtics were down 98-88, but they would never get any closer than six points in the last quarter.

Tatum needed 21 shots to get to 23, while Reaves had a 10-of-18 night (7 of 10 from 3) and scored 32 points mostly from the floor. The Celtics All-Star struggled from the field overall (8 of 21), but he was effective from a distance (5 of 10).

Brown finished with eight points, eight rebounds, and seven assists on the day he was chosen an All-Star. Despite this, he hardly registered on the scoreboard. He made only 4 of 12 shots from the field and none of his three 3-point attempts were made.

From a long distance, the Lakers found their advantage, making 19 of 36 (52.8%) 3-pointers, compared to the Celtics’ 16 of 48 (33.3%). In addition to playing tenacious defense, the Lakers caused 15 turnovers while registering 11 thefts. They turned the ball over just seven times and assisted on thirty of the forty field goals that were made.

For Los Angeles, all five starters and sixth man Rui Hachimura scored ten or more goals. Rumored trade candidate D’Angelo Russell ended with 16 points, 14 assists, and 8 rebounds.

With their victory on Thursday, the Lakers improved their record to 25-25, good for ninth place in the West, but they are still outside of the postseason picture. Los Angeles is still under a lot of pressure to act before the trade deadline next week. However, with their combined victories over Boston and Golden State, they’re in better shape than expected going into this road trip.
