Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB Starts Local Production in 2024 Ahead of Its Launch in India

In anticipation of its scheduled October 9 introduction, Mercedes-Benz has started local manufacture of the 2024 E-Class Long Wheelbase (LWB) in India. The brand’s Maharashtra factory in Chakan has started the local assembly. After its worldwide debut, the new E-Class is now arriving in India, more than a year prematurely. The Mercedes model, now in its sixth iteration, was the luxury German automaker’s first product to be locally produced in India back in 1995. The car’s back floor will have a newly automated body shop line that uses cutting-edge joining technologies, robots, and cognitive automation to produce bodies. Mercedes-Benz highlights that its “Make in India” activities are supported by a “robust supply chain” for the E-Class.

The gasoline-powered E 200 and the diesel-powered E 220d are the two versions of the new E-Class that will be available. The E 200 is equipped with a 1999cc, four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol M254 engine, creating 201bhp and 320Nm of torque, while the E 220d comes with a 1950cc, four-cylinder, turbo-diesel OM654M engine, providing 194bhp and 440Nm of torque. A 48V mild hybrid system with an integrated starter generator that can produce an extra 23 horsepower and 205 Nm for up to 30 seconds is featured in both variants. There is an automated nine-speed gearbox that transfers power to the back wheels.

The car’s front fascia is striking, with a large grille that showcases a three-dimensional logo and powerful LED headlamps on either side. Along the sides, the design adds new flat door handles and elegant 18-inch wheels. The updated appearance is emphasised on the back with LED taillights featuring a three-pointed star design and a reworked bumper with chrome inlays. Five exterior colour options for the new E-Class are planned: High Tech Silver, Polar White, Graphite Grey, Nautic Blue, and Obsidian Black.

With a revised dashboard that includes a 14.4-inch central infotainment display, a 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch screen reserved for the front passenger, the inside of the new E-Class is stunning. The Burmester 4D surround sound system, a panoramic sunroof, a selfie camera for taking pictures and videos, four-zone climate control, and wireless charging stations for front and rear passengers are some of the vehicle’s standout features.
