Emily Blunt in Talks for Steven Spielberg’s Next Summer Tentpole at Amblin & Universal

Emily Blunt, who received an Oscar nomination for her performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, may have discovered her next role, working with a filmmaker who served as an inspiration to both Nolan and a new wave of filmmakers. Although a contract hasn’t completed, insiders tell Deadline that Blunt is in early discussions to play the lead role in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming movie at Universal and Amblin. This will be the star’s first collaboration with the renowned filmmaker.

Given that the production is billed as a two-hander, Blunt would be taking on a main role. Spielberg’s longtime colleague David Koepp wrote the screenplay for the picture, which is based on a story he wrote. Kristie Macosko Krieger is producing. Plot specifics have been kept under wraps.

The movie, which Universal has set for May 15, 2026, will take place in the summer tentpole zone that Steven Spielberg essentially established with movies like Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark. It would be his first significant summer release in a long time.

Even though Blunt has never acted in a Spielberg picture, he has always been a fan, dating back to her role in the 2016 Amblin-produced version of The Girl on the Train. Ever since, the three-time Oscar winner has been an admirer, particularly of her most recent Universal picture, The Fall Guy, in which she featured with Ryan Gosling.

This would join the esteemed roster of directors that Blunt has collaborated with over the years, which already includes Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, Rob Marshall, Doug Liman, and Rian Johnson.

After receiving her first Oscar nod for director Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster Oppenheimer last year, the Quiet Place star is still producing top-notch work. Benny Safdie is directing her in A24’s The Smashing Machine, which stars Dwayne Johnson.
