Maserati Launches New “Super Sports Car” Inspired by the GT2

  • Maserati is planning to reveal a new “super sports car” at this year’s Monterey Car Week in California.
  • Maserati says the new model will be an evolution of the current MC20 luxury sports car.
  • The automaker has released a single teaser photo of the new car, with the full reveal scheduled for Friday, August 16.

August signals the approaching arrival of Monterey automobile Week and all of its outrageous automobile unveilings. Maserati released a teaser image of a new “super sports car” that it will unveil at this year’s event to start the celebration.

Maserati describes the new vehicle as a “further evolution of the MC20” and explained that it “inherits the racing spirit of the Maserati GT2,” although eschewing the name. The automobile was first built as an MC20 for production.

An aggressive set of louvres carved into the front fender is displayed in the teaser. But the model in the teaser doesn’t have dive planes or a huge lip like the GT2 or MCXtrema track car has. Rather, the front of the vehicle bears a striking resemblance to the regular roadgoing MC20, indicating that the new model will be allowed on public roads.

The 3.0-liter V-6 Nettuno engine, which is twin-turbocharged, will probably remain in some form on the new vehicle. The 90-degree powerplant in the base coupe and convertible (Cielo) models produces an amazing 621 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque, enabling the coupe to reach 60 mph in 3.2 seconds during our testing.

Complete details on the new vehicle will be unveiled at Monterey Car Week at the Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. Maserati is scheduled to deliver the limited-edition MC20 Icona and the MCXtrema to the event on Friday, August 16.
