Nicolas & Emiliano—The Maya Tapia Twins Winning Hearts with their Hip-Hop Swag

When people have a special gift, observers will often say it’s “in their blood”. For Nicolas and Emiliano Maya-Tapia’s history of dance running in the family, this is quite literally their truth. The twins’ dance story begins with their father, Omar: they attribute their dancing abilities to Omar’s extensive dancing background. The dancing genes do not stop there, however, since they also credit their drive for dance to their sister, Paulina. To quote the twins, “it’s been in our family since forever.” Nicolas and Emiliano are also part of the larger TikTok dance family, if you will, that has taken the social media world by storm over the past few years.

When it comes to styles of dance, the twins have showcased their hip-hop skills multiple times on TikTok, most notably in their dance they created to “Sneaky Link 2.0” audio that has been trending on TikTok. The twins shared, “hip-hop is our main source” and when asked how they felt about creating a hip-hop dance trend, they said it was “an exciting, proud moment we shared.” They also divulged that they would love to start more trends in the future. And they are not stopping there. Starting a trend made them “want to start more trends,” in their own words! If their future trends do as well as their very first TikTok dance creation, then the twins are right on track to continue solidifying their vibrant TikTok dance presence.

The twins are no stranger to TikTok trends and their virality, as they have also participated in other TikTok dance trends, such as the songs “Homecoming” by Lil Uzi Vert and “SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY Remix” feat. Kaliy Uchis and Moliy. When asked about their plans for future trends, the twins do not discriminate, as they said: “if the sound is trending on TikTok, we will see what we can do with it. With TikTok, you can make a dance out of any sound.” With this mindset, not only do the twins have dancing in the bag, but they have more than enough creativity to go around. There is no creativity without inspiration, however, and the twins’ personal dance inspo does not disappoint.

Naming one of the most iconic dancing-and-singing television shows, Glee, Nicolas and Emiliano both eagerly agreed that this six-season show is a huge source of dance inspiration for them. Known for its famous plot-induced lip-syncing of various well-known pop culture hits, the twins were quick to name Glee’s performances of “Toxic” (Britney Spears) and “Valerie” (The Zutons, Mark Robson feat. Amy Winehouse version) as some of their top dance and performance inspirations. When it comes to characters, Mike and Brittany, played by actors Harry Shum Jr and Heather Morris, provide a big source of inspiration to them to this day. Starting in 2009, Glee was a milestone of the 2000s, coming off of the heels of some amazing music and dance trends highlighted in this decade. The twins shared that they are huge Y2K fans; considering that TikTok is trending with all kinds of Y2K trends, Nicolas and Emiliano have certainly found their niche.
