Pokémon Go developer Niantic cancels four projects and lays off in excess of 80 individuals
Niantic, which has been attempting to repeat the monstrous progress of Pokémon Go with other versatile AR games, is laying off 8% of its workforce and canceling four projects.
“We recently decided to stop production on some projects and reduce our workforce by about eight percent to focus on our key priorities,” Niantic VP of communications Jonny Thaw said in a statement to The Verge. “We are grateful for the contributions of those leaving Niantic and we are supporting them through this difficult transition.
“This means we can focus on our most important priorities, including Pokémon Go and a select set of new experiences, as well as the Lightship platform. This increased focus, as well our strong core business, puts us in a position to weather the broader economic uncertainty many companies are facing and continue investing in the future of AR.”
The progressions mean Niantic is canceling Transformers: Heavy Metal, a game made in organization with Sleep No More maker Punchdrunk, and two titles codenamed Blue Sky and Snowball. Around 85 to 90 individuals are being given up.
Pokémon Go has demonstrated to be a getting through hit in spite of being almost six years of age, however other AR games haven’t had very as much achievement. Niantic has as of late closed down AR games in view of the Catan and Harry Potter establishments, and Microsoft shut down Minecraft Earth a year ago. All things considered, Niantic actually appears to be focused on making new games — its charming game Peridot is in a delicate send off, and the organization just reported a NBA title.
