Texans Waive Wide Receiver Diontae Johnson After Two Games

Wide receiver Diontae Johnson was dismissed by the Houston Texans on Tuesday in anticipation of their divisional-round playoff matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday.

Coach DeMeco Ryans stated on Tuesday, Unfortunately, it didn’t work out with Diontae. We’re on to the Chiefs.

Johnson was clearly furious in the locker room after the Texans defeated the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday in the wild-card playoffs. He was sitting at his locker, completely clothed, and glaring at the lack of targets and playing time. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and running back Joe Mixon attempted to console and uplift him.

Following the Texans’ December 23 waiver claim of Johnson from the Baltimore Ravens, Johnson has three receptions for 24 yards in two games with Houston. After the receiver declined to play in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles on December 1, Baltimore had moved on.

Johnson received a one-game suspension for refusing to play against the Eagles before the Ravens dismissed him. He was acquired by Baltimore in a trade with the Carolina Panthers on October 29, although he only appeared in 39 games and caught one ball for six yards.

Prior to the season, Johnson was acquired by the Panthers from the Pittsburgh Steelers. When he was traded to the Ravens, he had 30 receptions for 257 yards and three scores for Carolina.

Johnson recorded 391 receptions for 4,363 yards and 25 touchdowns in Pittsburgh before being selected by the Steelers in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. With his only 1,000-yard season and a career-high eight touchdown receptions in quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s final season, he was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2021.
