In the DJ Begley Classic, Belfry defeated the Commodores 63-49 after the Pirates had a poor start but finished strong against Perry Central.
After three quarters, Belfry was behind Perry Central 41-39.
On the first night of the DJ Begley Classic, the Pirates won the game by outscoring Perry Central 24–8 in the fourth quarter.
Magoffin County defeated Letcher Central 56-50 to start the DJ Begley Classic at Hazard. Hazard defeated Ashland Blazer 76-69 to end Friday night’s play.
The Bulldogs defeated Buckhorn 72-29 on Saturday. After that, Knott Central defeated Pike Central 56-53. Shelby Valley defeated Leslie County 70-65, Breathitt County defeated Rockcastle County 71-54, Harlan County defeated Betsy Layne 82-78, and Perry Central defeated Martin County 77-73.
After the first quarter, Perry Central surged out to a 16–11 advantage, and Belfry had a poor start. Belfry led 24–21 at the interval after outscoring the Commodores 13-5.
After a poor start to the third quarter, Perry Central outscored the Pirates 20–15 to establish a 41–39 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
During the fourth quarter, Perry Central was unable to handle Belfry’s trap and uptempo.
The Pirates were led by Jaxon Estridge, who finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. On the evening, Erik Rash and Matthew Little each contributed 14 points. With 12 points and 12 rebounds, Bryce Hagy finished with a double-double. In the victory, Carter Jude scored five more points.
Belfry shot 29 for 53 (54.7 percent) from the field to end the game. The Pirates’ three-point shooting percentage was 28.6 percent, or four of fourteen. One of its two free shots that evening was made by Belfry.
Beau Bacon scored a team-high 18 points to lead Perry Central. Landon Miller and Tyson Neace both contributed eight points. Mason Sumner and Nick Porter both scored five points. Tyler Robinson scored two goals, and Trayton Woods added three.
Jenkins will play Belfry (2-1) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
The first round of the WYMT Mountain Classic was set to begin Monday night with Perry Central (2-2) taking on Clay County. This season, the Mountain Classic will be hosted by the Commodores.
