Toyota and GM Form a Joint Venture in the Ionna EV Charging Network

As previously reported by GM Authority, General Motors formed a joint venture with a number of other significant automakers to create Ionna, a brand-new, highly capable electric car charging network that is slated to debut later this year. In light of this, rival Toyota has decided to get involved and has become an investor and founding partner of Ionna.

The automaker with headquarters in Japan has invested in Ionna alongside seven other automakers. Customers of Toyota and Lexus will thus be able to utilize Ionna’s public network of DC fast chargers after it launches.

Toyota is a welcome addition to the expanding Ionna family, CEO Seth Cutler of Ionna said in a prepared statement. “Their vision for the future of electric mobility in North America aligns perfectly with our mission to push the boundaries for the highest standards of quality, reliability, and customer experience. This partnership marks another significant achievement of many to come in our joint journey to transform EV charging and spearhead the adoption of sustainable transportation in North America.”

It’s important to note that by 2030, Ionna wants to have installed at least 30,000 EV charging stations across North America. To accommodate all-electric vehicles, these stations will also have NACS and CCS connectors.

Toyota Motor North America President and CEO Ted Ogawa said, “We are excited to announce our support of Ionna to deploy DC fast chargers throughout the U.S. and Canada.” “We believe this will not only promote the adoption of BEVs and increase customer confidence in the technology, but it will provide our Toyota and Lexus customers with access to Ionna’s rapidly growing charging network in North America.”

Notably, Toyota becomes a stakeholder in Ionna alongside BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis.
